Track your climbing progress, monitor your performance, and celebrate your achievements with Hold Hero.
1. Getting Started
Welcome to Hold Hero
Hold Hero is a simple, powerful app for tracking your climbing sessions. Whether you're into rope climbing or bouldering,
Hold Hero helps you log your climbs, track your progress, and visualize your performance over time.
App Overview
Hold Hero has two main sections accessible via tabs at the bottom of the screen:
- Add Tab - Log new climbs and view today's climbing sessions
- Dashboard Tab - View statistics, performance charts, and climbing history
Note: All your climbing data is stored locally on your device. Your information never leaves your phone,
ensuring complete privacy and security.
2. Adding Climbs
Opening the Add Climb Screen
To add a new climb, tap the Add tab at the bottom of the screen. You'll see either:
- A list of today's climbs (if you've already logged some today)
- An empty state with a mountain icon and arrow pointing to the "Add Climb" button
Adding a New Climb
Follow these steps to log a new climb:
- Tap the "Add Climb" button at the bottom of the screen
- A drawer will slide up from the bottom with the climb entry form
Step 1: Select Climbing Type
At the top of the form, choose between Rope Climbing and Bouldering using the segmented control.
Step 2: Select Difficulty
Choose the difficulty grade from the dropdown menu. The available grades depend on:
- Your selected climbing type (rope vs. boulder)
- Your grading system preferences (set in Settings)
Step 3: Select Letter Grade (Rope Climbing Only)
If you're logging a rope climb using the YDS (Yosemite Decimal System) and have letter grades enabled in settings,
you'll see an additional segmented control to select the letter grade (a, b, c, or d).
Letter grades are available for grades 5.10 and above in the YDS system. For example:
- 5.10a, 5.10b, 5.10c, 5.10d
- 5.11a, 5.11b, 5.11c, 5.11d
- And so on for 5.12, 5.13, and 5.14
Step 4: Select Completion Status (Rope Climbing Only)
For rope climbs, you can track how far you got:
- 1/4 - Completed one quarter of the route
- 1/2 - Completed half of the route
- 3/4 - Completed three quarters of the route
- Top - Successfully completed the entire route
Note: Boulder problems are always recorded as "Top" since bouldering doesn't use partial completion tracking.
Step 5: Save Your Climb
Once you've filled in all the information, tap the "Save" button at the bottom of the drawer.
Your climb will be saved with the current date and time, and you'll be returned to the main Add screen.
Tip: The app remembers your last selected climbing type (rope or boulder), so if you're logging multiple
climbs of the same type, you won't need to change it each time.
Viewing Today's Climbs
After adding climbs, you'll see them listed on the Add screen under "Today's Climbs". Each entry shows:
- Type indicator - "R" for rope climbs, "B" for boulder problems
- Difficulty grade - The full grade including letter grade if applicable
- Completion status - For rope climbs only
- Time - When you logged the climb
Deleting Climbs
To delete a climb from today's list:
- Swipe left on the climb entry
- Tap the delete button that appears
Warning: Deleting a climb is permanent and cannot be undone. Make sure you want to remove it before confirming.
3. Viewing Your Dashboard
The Dashboard tab provides a comprehensive overview of your climbing activity, statistics, and progress over time.
Statistics Section
At the top of the Dashboard, you'll see key statistics about your climbing:
- Rope Climbs - Total number of rope climbing sessions logged
- Boulder Problems - Total number of boulder problems logged
- Hardest Rope Climb - The highest difficulty rope climb you've completed (Top only)
- Hardest Boulder - The highest difficulty boulder problem you've completed
Note: If you've used multiple grading systems (e.g., both YDS and French for rope climbs),
the app will show separate "Hardest" entries for each system you've used.
Performance Charts
Below the statistics, you'll find horizontal bar charts showing your performance distribution:
- Rope Climbing Chart - Shows how many climbs you've completed at each difficulty level
- Bouldering Chart - Shows how many boulder problems you've completed at each grade
Each chart displays:
- Grade labels along the bottom (rotated for readability)
- Bar heights representing the number of climbs at each grade
- Count numbers above each bar showing the exact number
Tip: The charts only show grades where you have at least one climb, making it easy to see your
climbing range at a glance. Charts are scrollable horizontally if you have climbs across many difficulty levels.
Climbing History
At the bottom of the Dashboard, you'll see your climbing history organized by date. Each day shows:
- The date formatted in a readable format
- The number of climbs logged that day
Viewing Climbs for a Specific Day
To see all climbs from a particular day:
- Tap on any date in the Climbing History section
- A new screen will show all climbs from that day
- Each climb shows its type (R/B), difficulty, and completion status
Deleting Climbs from History
You can delete climbs from the day detail view:
- Open a day's climbs
- Swipe left on any climb entry
- Tap the delete button
Empty Dashboard
If you haven't logged any climbs yet, the Dashboard will show a friendly empty state with a mountain icon
and a message encouraging you to add your first climb.
4. Configuring Settings
Accessing Settings
To access the settings:
- Go to the Add tab
- Tap the gear icon (⚙️) in the top-right corner
- The settings drawer will slide up from the bottom
Grading Systems
Hold Hero supports multiple grading systems to match your preferences and location:
Rope Grading Systems
- YDS (Yosemite Decimal System) - The standard system used in the United States
- Grades range from 5.5 to 5.14+
- Supports letter grades (a, b, c, d) for 5.10 and above
- French - The standard system used in Europe and many other regions
- Grades range from 1 to 9c+
- Uses numbers and letters (e.g., 6a, 6b+, 7c)
Boulder Grading Systems
- V-Grade - The standard system used in the United States
- Grades range from VB to V10+
- Simple numeric progression (VB, V0, V1, V2, etc.)
- Font - The standard system used in Europe (Fontainebleau scale)
- Grades range from 3 to 9A+
- Uses numbers and letters (e.g., 6A, 6B+, 7C)
Letter Grades for YDS
When using the YDS system for rope climbs, you can enable or disable letter grades:
- Enabled - You'll see and can select letter grades (a, b, c, d) for climbs 5.10 and above
- Disabled - Only the base number grade will be shown (e.g., 5.10 instead of 5.10a)
Tip: Your grading system preferences are saved automatically. When you change systems, existing climbs
keep their original grades, but new climbs will use your newly selected system.
Saving Settings
After making changes, tap the "Done" button at the bottom of the settings drawer. Your preferences
will be saved immediately and applied to all new climbs you log.
5. Managing Your Data
Data Storage
All your climbing data is stored locally on your device using iOS's built-in data storage. This means:
- Your data never leaves your device
- No internet connection is required
- Your privacy is completely protected
- Data is automatically backed up if you have iCloud Backup enabled for your device
Deleting Data
You can delete individual climbs by swiping left on them in either:
- The "Today's Climbs" list on the Add tab
- The day detail view on the Dashboard
Backing Up Your Data
Since all data is stored locally, it's included in your regular iPhone/iPad backups:
- iCloud Backup - If enabled, your climbing data is automatically included
- iTunes/Finder Backup - Your data is included when you back up to your computer
Warning: If you delete the app, all your climbing data will be permanently removed. Make sure you have
a recent backup if you plan to reinstall the app.
6. Frequently Asked Questions
General Questions
Can I use multiple grading systems?
Yes! You can switch between grading systems at any time in Settings. The app will track which system you used for each climb,
so you can mix systems as needed. The Dashboard will show separate "Hardest" statistics for each system you've used.
Why don't I see letter grades for my rope climbs?
Letter grades are only available when:
- You're using the YDS (Yosemite Decimal System) for rope climbs
- You have "Use Letter Grades" enabled in Settings
- The difficulty is 5.10 or higher (letter grades aren't used for lower grades)
Can I edit a climb after saving it?
Currently, Hold Hero doesn't support editing climbs after they're saved. If you need to change a climb, delete it and
create a new one with the correct information.
Why are boulder problems always marked as "Top"?
In bouldering, you either complete the problem or you don't. There's no concept of partial completion like in rope climbing,
so all boulder problems are automatically recorded as "Top" when you log them.
Performance and Charts
Why don't I see all grades in my performance chart?
The charts only show grades where you have at least one completed climb. This keeps the charts focused on your actual
climbing range and makes them easier to read. If you want to see a wider range, try logging climbs at different difficulty levels.
How is "Hardest Climb" calculated?
The "Hardest Rope Climb" only counts climbs marked as "Top" (fully completed). The "Hardest Boulder" counts all boulder
problems since they're all considered completed. The app compares grades within the same grading system to determine which is hardest.
Data and Privacy
Is my data shared with anyone?
No. All your data stays on your device. Hold Hero doesn't collect, transmit, or share any information with third parties.
Your climbing data is completely private.
Do I need an internet connection?
No. Hold Hero works completely offline. All data is stored locally on your device, so you can use the app anywhere,
even without internet access.
What happens if I delete the app?
If you delete Hold Hero, all your climbing data will be permanently removed from your device. However, if you have
iCloud Backup enabled, you may be able to restore your data by restoring from a backup that included the app.
Troubleshooting
The app won't open or crashes
Try these steps:
- Force quit the app and reopen it
- Restart your device
- Make sure you're running the latest version of iOS (iOS 17.0 or later)
- If problems persist, try deleting and reinstalling the app (note: this will delete all your data unless you have a backup)
My climbs aren't showing up
Make sure you:
- Tapped "Save" after entering the climb information
- Are looking at the correct tab (Add tab for today's climbs, Dashboard for all climbs)
- Check the Dashboard's Climbing History section to see climbs from other days
The charts look wrong
Charts are based on your current grading system settings. If you've changed grading systems, the charts will reflect
climbs logged with the currently selected system. Climbs logged with other systems won't appear in the charts but will
still be counted in your statistics.
